The crysalis guide to lockdown

Helping you manage the COVID-19 funk x

We miss you! The past few months have been challenging here in Australia. The impacts of COVID-19 are stressful at best! While we aren’t able to look after our treasured salon family in person, we wanted to share our Crysalis self-care musts that we have been following during lockdown. Read on to learn more…

EXERCISE IN NATURE

Immersing yourself in nature and moving your body (whether that be a park, a leafy street, a walking track, or beautiful beaches) is an essential for both mental, physical, and spiritual health - especially while we are unable to go about our lives as usual. There are stacks of studies exploring the innumerable benefits of regular exercise in natural settings, including improvement in mood and self-esteem, as well as helping to reduce anxiety and depression.

A gentle walk in a tranquil setting can transform a normal moment in your day to an opportunity for meditation, soothing the spirit and calming the senses. We recommend turning your phone to do not disturb and enjoying a relaxing playlist (the in-house Crysalis Nomadic playlist on Spotify is perfect for this!), allowing your senses to absorb the scents and scenery around you.

HAIR-CARE is Self-Care

During lockdown, one of the saddest parts for the team at Crysalis is not being able to look after our beautiful clients! However, this doesn’t mean you can’t get your hair-care fix from home. One of our essential self-care musts (that is beneficial for the hair and the soul) is a weekly treatment.

The winter elements can have serious affects on hair. Between low humidity, cold and windy weather, constant exposure to central heating and extreme temperature changes can exacerbate breakage and dehydration of the hair. Luckily, treatments were created to combat this, boosting hydration and all over hair health!

We recommend the Oway Moisturising Hair Bath and Mask - which works in synchronicity to deeply hydrate, soften, and brighten the hair. Spoiling the senses with an olfactory bouquet of vanilla, cinnamon, and orange, the Oway Moisturising range is truly luxurious… boasting natural ingredients including:

~ Biodynamic Hazel: softening and nourishing, makes the hair fibre soft and manageable

~ Organic Honey: soothing, nourishing, and adds shine

~ Ethical Murumuru: rich in hair proteins, it repairs and deeply nourishes dry, brittle, and dull hair

The Oway Moisturising Hair Mask can be used as both a conditioner and a treatment. When using as a treatment, we recommend shampooing the hair twice with the Oway Moisturising Hair Bath, towel drying the hair and applying a small amount of the mask. Leave in the hair for at least 10 minutes - but one of our favourite things to do is pop our hair up in a Machete clip and leave it in to work it’s magic while we give the house a scrub!

The Oway range, including the Moisturising Hair Bath and Moisturising Hair Mask is available online now!

WHOLEFOOD eats ~ EQUIUM SOCIAL

One of the most both physically and emotionally supportive things we can do in our day to day is nourishing ourselves with delicious, simple, and wholesome food. Hosting a seasonal menu, with locally roasted coffee from our favourite Unison Roasters (mini shoutout to Al!), and artworks from Newcastle creatives lining the walls, Equium Social is not just a cafe.

Tucked away in Mayfield East on the ever bustling Maitland Rd, lined almost completely with large, sun-filled windows, Equium Social resonates a relaxed and inviting energy. Welcoming you with locally sourced produce, the menu straddles the delicate balance of wholesome and fulfilling to downright mouthwatering. The interiors echo nature; with warm woods, natural textures and tones, with soft lighting dried botanicals gracefully lining the ceilings. Hosting an in-house music studio out the back, you are immersed in community by stepping foot in the front doors!

Our Crysalis must-eats from the Equium Social menu are the Sourdough Crumpets (your breakfast will never be the same) and the Sweet Potato & Herb Falafel! Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, Equium Social is now available for both delivery (within a 5km radius) and takeaway. You can find Equium Social at 1/5 Maitland Rd, Mayfield East NSW. If you’re wanting to support local this lockdown and put down the proverbial spatula, order online click here or call to order on (02) 4089 5732!

JOURNALLING for the soul

The impacts of the current climate have had us yo-yoing to and fro… being busier than ever, isolating, limited time with our loved ones, and lots of stress on our shoulders. One of our essential components of our daily self-care routine to help manage this extra load is journalling! Scientifically proven to promote a myriad of health benefits, including improved sleep, emotional regulation and healing, building a better relationship with self, and cultivating gratitude - reflecting on yourself and your day is a gentle and slow method of introducing a restorative meditation practice to your day.

We recommend our Wilde House Paper Self Reflections Pad. A minimalist design that prompts and inspires a holistic form of journalling, asking you to explore your inner and outer self, your past, present and future. The pages are designed to be torn off, allowing you to reflect on what is true for you right now… and in a true form of meditation practice, tearing the page and letting go when finished.

The Wilde House Paper range, including the Self Reflections Pad, is available online now!
